Numerology by date of birth: how it is calculated and how to read it

Numerology by date of birth adds all the digits of your birth date, then adds again until one digit is left, keeping 11, 22 and 33. The sum is arithmetic you can check; what a number means is a tradition.

What it is

Numerology turns a date and a name into a few numbers. This tool uses the Pythagorean method, in which every letter has a value from 1 to 9.

One rule reduces every total on this page. Add the digits of the total, then the digits of the result, and stop at the first single digit. The exception is 11, 22 and 33, the master numbers: if the chain reaches one of them, it stops there. So 29 becomes 2 + 9 = 11 and stays 11, while 31 becomes 3 + 1 = 4.

The life path number comes from the whole birth date. All eight digits of the day, the month and the year are added, and that total is reduced. For 14 July 1990 the digits add up to 31, so the life path number is 4. The birthday number comes from the day of the month alone: 14 gives 1 + 4 = 5.

Some sources reduce the day, the month and the year separately and add the results. That can give a different number for the same date. This tool does not do that: it uses the total of all the digits.

With a full name you get three more numbers. The destiny number, also called the expression number, counts every letter. The soul number counts only the vowels. The personality number counts only the consonants.

A letter’s value comes from a table. In the Latin table A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on up to I and R, which are 9. The tool picks the Latin or the Cyrillic table from the letters you type, and you can switch. Y counts as a consonant. In the Cyrillic table Й, Ъ and Ь are consonants, and four Ukrainian letters count as their nearest Russian one: Є as Е, І as И, Ї as И and Ґ as Г. A letter the table has no value for is left out, and the tool tells you how many.

The Pythagorean square is a grid of the digits 1 to 9. It shows how often each digit appears in your birth date and in four working numbers made from it. Zeros are not counted.

Your date and name are worked out in your browser. The code that does it receives the date and the name and returns numbers; it has no way to send them anywhere, and the tool saves nothing.

The arithmetic can be checked by hand. The short text beside each number is general wording from the tradition, the same for everyone who gets that number, and not written about you personally.

How it works, step by step

  1. Choose your date of birth. The year list starts at 1900, and the calculation accepts years from 1900 to 2100.
  2. If you want the name numbers, type your full name. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and digits are ignored.
  3. Read the numbers. The life path and birthday numbers come from the date; the destiny, soul and personality numbers come from the name. Each number shows the total it was reduced from, for example “from 29”, and a master number is marked.
  4. Look at the Pythagorean square and the four working numbers beside it.
  5. To check the result, open “How the letters are counted” to see the table and the vowels, and repeat the sum with the rule above.

How to read your numbers

Start with the life path number, then the birthday number. Each shows the total it was reduced from, so you can repeat the sum yourself.

If you gave a name, read the destiny, soul and personality numbers next. They depend on the spelling you typed and on the table, so a different spelling can give a different number.

A master number is a number the rule does not reduce. The tradition gives it a special meaning; the rule itself is only a convention.

Treat each text as a thought to try on, not as a description of you.

What it can do

  • Work out the life path number and the birthday number from a date.
  • With a name, work out the destiny, soul and personality numbers.
  • Keep the master numbers 11, 22 and 33, and show the total behind every number.
  • Build the Pythagorean square from the date.
  • Count a name in the Latin or the Cyrillic table, Ukrainian letters included.

What it cannot do

  • It does not predict anything. A number is arithmetic; what it means is a tradition.
  • It uses one method. Other methods give other numbers for the same date or name.
  • It gives these five numbers and the square, and nothing more. There is no personal year, no compatibility and no name-change advice.
  • A letter outside the Latin and Cyrillic tables, such as a Greek one, is not counted.
  • It does not accept dates before 1900 or after 2100.
  • The texts beside the numbers are not about you personally: everyone who gets the same number gets the same wording.

Who it is for

People who want to see how a numerology number is built and to check the sum themselves. People who like a number as a starting point for reflection. It is not a tool for decisions about health, law or money.

Questions and answers

How is the life path number calculated?

Add all the digits of the birth date, day, month and year together, then reduce the total by adding its digits until one digit is left, unless you reach 11, 22 or 33. For 14.07.1990 the digits add up to 31, and 3 + 1 gives 4.

Why does another site give me a different number?

Other sites may reduce the day, the month and the year separately and then add them, which can end on a different number. This tool adds all the digits first and reduces once. Neither is the only correct answer; each is the answer of its own method.

What are master numbers?

They are 11, 22 and 33. When the reduction reaches one of them, it stops and keeps it instead of going on to a single digit. The tradition gives them a special meaning; in this tool they are marked, and the total behind them is shown.

Is my name sent anywhere?

No. The date and the name are worked out in your browser, and the tool does not send or save them. Our tests check that the calculation code imports nothing, and that the page’s code imports nothing that can reach the network or the browser’s storage. The name field also switches off the browser’s autofill history.

Which spelling of my name should I use?

The tool counts exactly the letters you type, so a different spelling can give different numbers. Choose the spelling you want to look at. The tool does not decide which one is right.

Does numerology predict the future?

No. The numbers are arithmetic, and what they mean is a tradition. Use them to think about yourself, not to learn what will happen.

Which dates can I use?

Years from 1900 to 2100. The year list in the tool starts at 1900.

Are the texts beside the numbers about me?

No. They are general wording from the tradition, the same for everyone who gets the same number, and not written about you personally.

A note

The numbers on this page are arithmetic: you can repeat every sum by hand. What a number means is a tradition. Use it for reflection and entertainment, as the tool says. It is not science and not a prediction, and it does not replace medical, legal or financial advice.
